Introducing Raking Weeds

November 13, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The collective, founded in 2020, is grounded in contemplative practice and dedicated to replacing toxic, polluting and wasteful art materials and processes with harmless botanical and natural alternatives. Recognizing that contemporary art practice and much of its material manifestations are dependent on the exploitation of the natural environment and that most artist studios are concentrated sources of toxic materials and disposal, Raking Weeds Collective is exploring an alternative.

Although making natural paints, inks, and dyes is labor intensive and counter to the convenience of purchasing acrylics, oils, and other toxic art materials, the collective has discovered wonder, joy, beauty and immense satisfaction in working with natural materials.

Raking Weeds member Danila Rumold finds “beauty in the unpredictable and imperfect process of making botanical dyes from local plants, and the exploration of everyday labor.”

Collective artist Monika Bittman explores how seemingly opposing perceptions can coexist through “the interaction of geometric forms with the natural ways in which materials organize themselves.”

Recognizing the Earth as a work of art, David D’Agostino, the third member of Raking Weeds, is attempting to reposition beauty as a radical, transgressive embrace of the very salvation of the Earth itself and hopes that his work also provides a resilient challenge to the contemporary climate crisis.
