In Conversation: Valmai Howe Elkins and Mark Gordon

October 28, 2022 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

In this dynamic dialogue, author Valmai Howe Elkins will share excerpts from and discuss her memoir, Reconstructing Mabel alongside filmmaker Mark Gordon, who will screen clips from his new documentary focusing on Blue Spruce Standing Deer (Taos Pueblo), entitled Man of Many Colors.

Elkins is a former Taos resident who opted to escape east coast winters for high desert breezes, coincidentally landing down the street from the iconic Mabel Dodge Luhan House. This fascination with Taos is echoed by Santa Fe director Mark Gordon, whose film follows Blue Spruce Standing Deer as he navigates expressions of contemporary Indigeneity in an increasingly hybridized world.

As Valmai Elkins joins virtually, Gordon will be screening portions of Man of Many Colors live from the gallery, with a discussion following that addresses colonial occupation and land use in New Mexico.
