December 3, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Our new exhibit, Enchanted Land, will open Saturday, December 3, 12–4 pm, with a festive opening party. Featured are carved and assembled wood sculpture and tableaus by Chris Olson, in collaboration with Gwyn Madeen’s pastel and charcoal drawings; photographs by Dave Campbell; and watercolor/collage/drawings by Shelley Horton-Trippe. Also included will be holiday gifts and trimmings, vintage ornaments, vintage toys, and tastes & smells to delight the senses.
All of the featured artists are deeply rooted here in Northern New Mexico, finding the beauty and power, and mystery of this place, and transmuting that through these enchanted works.
Chris Olson’s carved pieces are fanciful scenes inhabited by strange and lively hybrid creatures, engaged in activities suggesting simultaneously familiar, mundane, and fantastic narratives. The tableaus are enhanced by collaborator Gwyn Madeen’s energetic pastel and charcoal drawings.
Dave Campbell’s extraordinarily textured images, honed by years of deep looking, expose the peculiar confluence of the ordinary, the run-down and abandoned and overlooked human doings, and the natural beauty that is Northern New Mexico. His photographs present a kind of wabi sabi vision and appreciation of this place.
Shelley Horton-Trippe’s drawings, collages, and watercolors reflect her conviction that art can transcend ordinary reality, transforming materials into “an otherness, beyond words.” Horton-Trippe’s works in this exhibit, on paper and in little snow globes, are concise expressions of her emotional and spiritual processes.
