What is the music of poetry? How can the rhythms, phrasing, and ideas in a poem be translated into music? And what if the music were to act as a counterpoint, contradiction, or commentary on the text, adding value and nuance of its own? Join us for a reading and musical exploration of the poetry of Joan Logghe, featuring conductor and arts educator Oliver Prezant and improvising musicians Carla Kountoupes, violin; Jerry Weimer, clarinet; and Katie Harlow, cello. The program takes place on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 2:00 p.m. at Strata Gallery, 418 Cerrillos Rd. in the Design Center. Program length: about 90 minutes. During the program, Joan will read for us, and Oliver and the musicians will create music based on the sound, the language, and the imagery of the poems, as well as your thoughts and impressions.”Joan’s poetry is so rich in images, sense-impressions, and sonorous word combinations – it’s perfect for this kind of musical exploration,” said Prezant. “As we take time to experience different aspects of the poetry, the musicians will be ready to capture the mood and the meaning of the moment and turn it into music. We’ll rehearse to get ready, of course, but the musicians won’t hear the poetry until the day of, along with the audience. Can’t wait to hear Joan, and to hear what we come up with musically!”
