Passage: Great Lakes
The transition from our home in Northern New Mexico came at the height of the global pandemic in the Fall of 2020, landing us in a small town on the shores of northern Lake Michigan in order to help in the care of my husband’s nonagenarian mother. The moist, green environment of the Big Lake, as Lake Michigan is colloquially called, could not be a sharper contrast to the arid sweep and sharp, clear light of the Southwest.
It was only after two years of daily walks along its shores that I felt any measure of competency to capture this enormous and moody inland sea whose sky and water are capable of combining into a pellucid bowl of light.
These small paintings are an attempt to pay tribute to the life and being of our Northern Great Lakes, to their beauty, their fragility, and their complexity.
Lisa Mele focuses on rare gemstones from around the world. Her work has delicacy and boldness. This is fine jewelry meant to be lived in.
