Daniel Stephensen at Alluvial

I have this aphoristic remark from poet Paul Celan kicking around in my head: “Give in when outnumbered, but as prisoner speak in an un-understandable language,” and I used to think that the point was to go on speaking no matter what, but now I really think I had it upside-down, or inside-out: there is an absolutely impervious need to compose oneself in some language, Celan is saying.
I see that what I’ve made is a kind of art, but it doesn’t really matter. What really matters is the language, or languages, that are coming into the world now—and no metaphors here: stone language, wood language, light language. What really matters is then to compose oneself, to be in that impervious need—that’s it—here it is, here it is…
