Aurelia Gallery is happy to host a Poetry Reading celebrating the work of two Santa Fe women writers, Breshaun Joyner, a well known teacher at Santa Fe Prep, poet, and performer, and Iris Vazquez, a talented studio artist and poet.

Uppity Sistahs began in 2018 as a northern New Mexico black women writing collective. Their upcoming book Greasin’ the Scalp is a profusion of literary musings and observations artfully steeped in being Black in a country where that is both a curse and a crown.

Breshaun-Birene Joyner is an educator, writer, and performer from Bloomington, Indiana by way of Los Angeles, California. Drawn to New Mexico for graduate school, she has called this part of the southwest and Santa Fe her home for the last twelve years. Her poetry, cultural essays, and short stories are written with a balance of raw truth and gentle humor in the voice of a Black womanmotherdaughterhuman. The myriad merging of expressions that collection of identities evoke, provocatively stains the paper and stage.

Iris Graham Vazquez is a writer and artist residing in Santa Fe, NM for seventeen years. She writes from the perspective of a black woman child. Her writings stem from experiences of growing up in the American South. She instills a mix of humor along with poignancy when dealing with intimate subject matter. In addition to being a writer, Iris is also a visual artist. Her sculptures and paintings often depict the lives and nature of African Americans living and thriving in the South.

$15 tickets, purchased at the door, will entitle ticket holders to receive a free copy of the book, Greasin’ the Scalp: A Literary Cornucopia, with a planned release date in February 2024.
