This juried exhibition will feature artworks that speak to the ephemeral—the fleeting moments in life that are attempted to be captured in art. What moments do we try to capture and want to hold onto? What moments do we address that speak to issues we want to change? As artists, we attempt to create something that speaks to specific moments in time. The world is constantly changing and evolving, but how do we capture that moment or feeling? Is there something that has impacted us, or something we hope to leave an impact on? It is through artwork that we can leave a mark or a trace of ourselves.
In the 19th century, both Romanticism and Impressionism created a shift to form a new sense of beauty in nature and impressions of the moment. Futurism in the 20th century, also presented the ephemeral in an attempt to embody movement. Expressionism attempted to capture emotions in art. Further Surrealism explored dreams and memories in artwork. In this digital age, ephemerality is present in our day to day lives. Ephemerality speaks to the difficulty of capturing the world around us, as well as a desire to preserve it or to enact change. Any artist whose artwork addresses or involves moments, change, materiality, time, emotion is encouraged to apply.
Ephemerality is a juried exhibition held at Strata Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The exhibition will run from April 4 – April 21, 2023.
