Vital Spaces has announced the Community Art Closets (CACs) – a way to provide free art supplies to anyone in our community who needs them. To make their vision for Santa Fe as a place where art and creative expression is accessible to all a long term reality, they need ongoing community support. They are asking for small monthly monetary donations to be able to continuously purchase supplies and/or ongoing donations of supplies (new or gently used) to keep this initiative going. They will also, of course, gladly accept one-time donations of money or supplies.
Those of us in the arts know that art and creative expression is healing. It’s medicine. And medicine should be a right for all, not a privilege. Even before this global pandemic the question of who has access to art and creative expression was problematic. Unfortunately now, as more people lose jobs and face poverty, and kids are out of school, art is becoming more and more of a privilege than ever before. Before COVID, most Santa Fe kids had access to art supplies through their public schools.
The Community Art Closets serve the Santa Fe community, particularly youth and families. They will be stocked with a range of art supplies for all skill and age ranges, including coloring sheets and activity prompts for younger artists from our partner arts organizations.
